Automatic girth welding
Bygging submerged arc Automatic Girth Welding (AGW) machine for Single Side Welding suitable for horizontal welding of tanks built Top-Down”
Horizontal circumferential welds account for a substantial portion of the welding required during storage tank construction. The Bygging Submerged Arc Automatic Girth Welding Machine is designed to mechanise this operation and provide continuous, consistent welding around the tank circumference.
For tanks constructed using the top-down jacking method, the AGW can be used after a new shell course has been positioned and the vertical joints completed. The lifted tank is lowered onto the newly erected shell course and the external horizontal joint can then be welded automatically.
Where automatic welding is required on both the external and internal horizontal joints, the AGW can be combined with Bygging retractable jacks. After completion of the external weld, the jack trestles retract hydraulically away from the shell, creating the clearance required for the welding machine to travel around the inside circumference.
This integration of hydraulic lifting and automatic welding substantially reduces the amount of manual horizontal welding required and allows contractors to obtain greater utilisation from the same AGW equipment.
Salient Features:

- Same Power Source can be used for root welds and for FCAW / MIG / SMAW vertical welds.
- Two or more FCAW / MIG / SMAW welding heads can be used using one Power Source (by using Multiweld 350) which increases vertical welding productivity by more than double.
- Same mechanism can be used for Arc gouging.
- Ambient temperature range at which the machine can work : -5 to + 65 deg C.
- Machine is compact, light weight & can be handled without the need for a large crane.
Bygging AGW's Productivity is equivalent to that of 6 welders.
